MANZ 'Our Nature' Exhibition

Art New Zealand article by Don Abbott

Medal Art New Zealand (MANZ) is an informal collective of more than 30 artists who put on a show every two years. The first was at Star Art on Karangahape Road back in 1989; this years exhibition was the fourth hosted by Artis Gallery in Parnell.

The room embodies a collective spirit and energy that is difficult to generate with a regular gallery group show; opening nights are well-attended celebrations that feature the noise of multiple conversations and the crush of many bodies.

The range and scope  of what is on offer means the repeat vists are common, and time passes quickly as the medals on show are scrutinised, enjoyed and adored. The origins of the group's focus dates back to ancient Rome, when medals were made and awarded to athletes and heroes.

MANZ shows are the highlight of any year, and this is no exception. The inventiveness of the collective's members fills the room with a zest that is infectious and enthralling; it is remarkable that so many big ideas can come from such a group of smallish works. The collective benefits from a long history of genuine collegiality, and it is not a stretch to think that this, too, is on show at 2023's MANZ show.
