Elizabeth Rees
Rees has been exhibiting since 1991 and holds Diplomas in Fine Arts from Queen Elizabeth College and the University of Canterbury. She began with social satire linked to television and celebrity and her work explored the relationship between the body, the mind and the environment in which we exist.
After an absence of several years showing work in Auckland, Rees joined ARTIS Gallery in 2012 and during this time has presented 6 solo exhibitions at this Gallery.
“The most mundane aspects of our lives are often majestic – if we only knew it. We live in such overwhelming beauty and we so often take it for granted and never stop to “take it in”.
My painting I hope will convey just a thought about beauty – and its omnipresence for all of us here – on our doorstep and fundamentally a part of us. This is what I have attempted to address in my paintings.” Rees

The Backroad & Earthlight 13 September - 2 October 2022Elizabeth Rees has been exhibiting with ARTIS Gallery since 2011. Her work explores the relationship between the body, the mind and the environment in which we exist. This collection of new oil paintings by Elizabeth Rees marks the beginning of a new studio and lifestyle in the Bay of Islands. Fascinated by people from all walks of life in her Northland community, Rees began to assemble her impressions and visual notes on the colours, vegetation and pace of life in her new environment. Marté Szirmay has long been regarded as one of New Zealand’s most accomplished artists. Her work is represented in private and public collections in New Zealand and abroad. Creating sculptures for Marté is about creating a language of signs and symbols that transcend regional, cultural and social limitations.
