Based on the origin story of Aotearoa... Kuiamārōtini (Kupe’s wife) is said to have been the first to sight our Islands aboard the waka Matawhaorua whilst in pursuit of the giant octopus Te Wheke. Legend has it that she exclaimed "He ao! He ao! He ao tea roa!" meaning, ‘A cloud! A cloud! A long white cloud!’.
