The Fable is told by Korimako:
"Piwakawaka flew to the trunk of Old Kahikatea and asked of the great tree..”why is it that this great silence has fallen to our forest, tell us what has happened?”
The old tree replied, “For a thousand years now I have looked down from this tall place. At a time men would climb my lofty height to gather my sweet fruit as did Kaka and Kereru and Tui and all the while beautiful Huia found our fruit fallen to the forest floor.
But the world is changing as it must and when the song of the Huia left our forest, the silence cries loudest ever heard.”
