In his long career Dawe has been the recipient many grants and awards including the 1999 Wallace Visa Gold Award. A major survey of his work ‘Acts of Enquiry’ was held at the Robert McDougall Gallery in 1999 and his work can be found in public and private collections both in New Zealand and overseas.

Dawe’s work, which has ranged from the expansive to the intimate, has always been one of engagement and investigation. The rhythm of the seasons, environmental and social concerns are strong themes.

Hinewai is a native bush reserve on Banks Peninsula just north of Akaroa. Once farmland this area was retired and set aside for restoration. It was discovered by removing grazing stock and invasive pests such as possums the original bush (with some help) began to recover and grew through the extensive cover of gorse. Gorse provided a nutrient rich nursery for the native bush which as it grows kills off the gorse. These works highlight and celebrate this wonderful contradiction and continue a series of works under the generic title “Towards Repair” and “Gorse is a nursery”
