Peter Nicholls was born in 1936 in Whanganui New Zealand. He was educated at the Canterbury School of Art Christchurch, Auckland Teachers’ College and Elam School of Fine Arts Auckland (Honours). Nicholls also gained a Masters in Sculpture at the University of Wisconsin, Superior, Wisconsin, USA.
Nicholls has numerous large-scale works in private and public collections nation wide and internationally. Within New Zealand his work can be seen at Gibbs Sculpture Park Kaipara Harbour, Connells Bay Sculpture Waiheke Island, Auckland Domain, Orakei Basin Auckland, Balaena Bay Wellington and the University of Otago – to name a few.
The main theme in his work is a continually shifting dialogue between the physical properties of energy and matter and ways of experiencing them. A secondary theme is time: the past – time as it is felt in the experiencing of a piece.
