John McLean’s eagerly anticipated new book is due to be released at the end of November 2015.
The book, The Farmer’s Wife and the Farmer, follows the story of Farmer Tom and his wife, Constance, on their separate, eventually converging quests throughout the iconographic landscapes of Taranaki.
The story is solid with physical immediacy – mustering, shearing, fishing, butchering for meat, a country dance, the light on and beneath water, the rush of felling fish. Relationships are insistently, joltingly close, between people and the bush, seer and pupil, yearning wife and a husband who waits for his meal “with knife and fork upright, like goalposts, in his clenched fists”. – David Hill
