ARTIS presents ‘Silent Stage’ – an exhibition where Rees explores the whimsical world of the theatre and the costumed characters who inhabit this curious stage.
The works may be seen as a metaphor for the parts we all play in life – the garments we wear for different roles, or perhaps the comfort and security that might arise from being “housed” in bright costumes that belie the true nature of the wearer.
The dichotomy between our private and public lives has been a recurrent theme throughout Rees’ career. In this exhibition, rich and formal attire allows each character to take their turn upon the stage, yet preserve what is private by virtue of their disguise.
The paintings are created for entertainment and enjoyment, as theatre also entertains – that we might recognise something of ourselves in the performance.
