Although John Blackburn resides in the UK, he has exhibited annually at ARTIS Gallery since 2009. With the exception of 2014, Blackburn has returned to New Zealand for several months each year to paint and to be present at ARTIS Gallery exhibition openings.
Blackburn’s 2015 exhibition, Inspiration, opens at ARTIS Tuesday 10 February.
“This exhibition includes a large triptych from the Prescription Series and I am very pleased to be able to anchor the exhibition around this particular work. The painting is unique, in the sense that it was painted and made in two different parts of the world – initially begun in my studio in England and then transported, mounted and finished in New Zealand. Recent examples of my Prescription Series have been sold in both London and Miami.
This summer, once again having the wonderful opportunity to paint at the Muriwai retreat, Earthskin, I have also made several more traditional smaller abstract works, which are tranquil in nature.
On 28 January 2015 a symposium was held at the Muriwai studio and the panel included Jonathan Gooderham (ARTIS Director), Christopher Johnstone (Art Historian), John Coley (artist) and myself. The discussion revolved around the creative process and the philosophical background to my work.”
