ARTIS Gallery is proud to present Liam Barr’s first solo show since he joined them in 2012. It is said that ‘the eyes are the windows to the soul’ and this is certainly true of this new series of oil paintings, Lore & Behold, by Wellington based artist Liam Barr.
Each of these figurative works draw the viewer in to ‘scratch’ at the soul beneath. The narratives illustrate a historical element familiar to Liam’s earlier works (Pakeha 2011) and spin dark tales of personal turmoil, judgement, revenge, debauchery, stoicism and sorrow. There is much to be gleaned from the detail and Barr’s academic abilities come to the fore within these highly accomplished pieces.
Depictions of notable persons include: Maraea Morete (Maria Morris) in Salvation, Te Kooti in The Upraised Hand and a haunting likeness of Katherine Mansfield in Postscript. Fauna also play a considerable part in this exhibition, with an array of birds, sheep, horses, dogs and eels making an appearance as special guests. These companions communicate a level of symbiotic understanding between mankind and animal, where each require the other in order to survive – physically for the animal and spiritually for mankind.
Lore & Behold opens in ARTIS Gallery on Tuesday 18 March until Monday 14 April 2014.
