Artwork Description / Detail
Target Practice continues the dialogue of my 2002 show: Solitaire/Soliloquy a discourse with myself semiotics, ideograms & ideographic systems. The work also reflect on the the associations and emotional responses that a sign actualises in our culture.
• The upright even armed cross relates to the square and the 4 cardinal points have always had connections to the land. In flags it represents nations, countries, claims to a right of possessions of the earths surface. Turn it to form a diagonal cross and it signifies prohibition and invalidation.
• Looking at military maps the diagonal cross marks the site for destruction. When the object, installation, habitat is destroyed a circle is drawn around the diagonal cross.
In this context Target Practice signifies geographical modifications by man. The work represent a variety of outcomes – some parts are static, fixed objects (the squares = Earth); some are interactive, requiring the audience to engage with their associations and emotional responses to the ‘sign’.
