Artwork Description / Detail
Captain Cook never entered the Waitemata, its tides, shallows & reefs made it too risky.
George Baloghy has used a John Barr Clark Hoyte (1835 – 1913) watercolour from the 1870’s as his starting point to create this piece of fiction. He has made alterations to the original, obviously adding Cook’s ship, as well as a Pa on North Head, and the surprised warriors in the foreground. Hoyte made several dozen such Auckland landscapes, many very similar to each other.
